"Gentle colon is an operator friendly software for CT-colonography that offers an automatically generated fly through path, an excellent 3D presentation and an simultaneous update on site of inspection on reformatted CT-images including a presentation perpendicular to the path’s axis. To facilitate 3D-reading the local section in view is also presented cut open in two halves, showing the mucousa en face, while the bowel wall and its surrounding in profile in ordinary CT grey scale. These cut open halves can be turned around the long axis and reduces the need for a diagnostic fly through the gut lumen in both oral and aboral direction.

With the next software update, the cutting line of these cut open halves will pass through any marked object on the fly through 3D image, i.e. the marked area will directly reveal its nature, whether it is a diverticular or intra-luminal lesion. The obvious advantage is the immediate CT-presentation of the soft tissue beneath the mucousal surface and adjacent tissue compartments. Also Houndsfield Units of any chosen ROI will then be displayed.

Gentle colon calculates and presents images without any filtration, visualisation of the slightest artefact is displayed to make the reader aware of possible miscalculations. (comments: Through the extreme high spatial and contrast resolution of the 3D surfaces flat lesions are visualised by the system!) A filter may be actively chosen to smooth out the surface but has not been used in our institution. A direct reporting option comes with the Gentle colon programme."
